‘Muses LA’ – Chuck Sperry Solo Showcase with Spoke Art at Beyond Eden Art Fair

Spoke Art is bringing Chuck Sperry’s solo showcase “Muses LA” – a new collection of Sperry’s contemporary-classical muses inspired by the spirit of modern rock poster art, graffiti art, the spirit of 1960’s psychedelia, and in broader terms, inspired by the perennial theme of Orphic Dionysian mysteries.

Beyond Eden takes place every October at the LA Municipal Art Gallery and is co-hosted by a great group of galleries including Thinkspace, Copro and C.A.V.E. Our two galleries, Spoke Art and Hashimoto Contemporary will be exhibiting there, representing the dynamic San Francisco art scene.

For this event, they will be bringing down several new works on wood panel by Chuck as well as a dozen sold-out gig posters pulled from Chuck’s archives.

“I wanted to create a poster, that hits the mysterious and surrealistic aspects of the famous novel, but at the same time has the attraction of a piece of art that you would hang on the wall in children’s room. The link to the actual book, the famous piece of literature, is important, and that is why the quotations are incorporated into the poster.

Also, to set this apart from Disney’s Alice, and more aligned with the novel, the colours are sombre and loaded with contrast. In the book I particularly love the way the characters enter the stage from out of nowhere, so I wanted to create this weird scene where the actors appear randomly in a dark and mushroom infused universe with no logic interaction. Not of this world, but definitely humorous and spirited.” – Mads Berg
