Weekend Features: Amazing Japanese Commercial

It’s an Art World

This Japanese commercial shows a wooden ball rolling down a sloped xylophone and playing the song “Jesu, The Joy of Man’s Desiring”, by Johann Sebastian Bach. Quite a feat and though I don’t know for sure how much of this was real, I’d like to think it was. An incredible masterpiece. I can’t imagine the amount of time it took to get it right:

For those of you unfamiliar with the song, here’s a great piano rendition of it. This version was the end credits to the 1997 Japanese animation film, The End of Evangelion, which concluded the popular Japanese series, Neon Genesis Evangelion. Hey, hows about someone do some Evangelion art and screenprints yea?

Weekend Features: “Man in a Lawn Chair” by Jim Carrey

It’s an Art World

Yes, the actor/comedian Jim Carrey. Apparently he has his own website which is kinda like his own real-life take on his movie The Truman Show. In this, he reveals that he has his own art studio and shows a video of him in the process of making his own art screenprint. Pretty cool as it gives an insight into the screenprinting process for those unfamilar with it. Check out his site and video process HERE as the video embed may not show below. I’m curious to see what the finished product looks like, but whatever it is, it looks to be huge!

Weekend Features: “The Misunderstood” by Jeanne Donnadieu

It’s an Art World

Since it’s Labor Day Monday, I’ll cheat a bit and say it’s still the weekend. Recent news popped up that is causing a stirring to all Van Gogh fans. Apparently a painting surfaced a few weeks back that is supposedly a full portrait of none other than Vincent Van Gogh. You know the artist that did:

The painting was initially bought by a couple at an auction in France 18 months ago for 1,700 euros. When the couple first saw the painting they had their suspicions and took a risk and bid for it. This painting, signed by a relatively unknown artist named Jeanne Donnadieu titled the back of the painting “‘L’Incompris'” or “The Misunderstood”. Quite fitting for our famous artist yes? Since then they have contacted various experts in the art world in an attempt to confirm the identity of the man in the painting with many experts concluding that it was likely to be him. The most positive confirmation came when they dug a bit deeper about Donnadieu and found that she lived four doors away from Van Gogh. Wow!

They are still gathering more info but the painting is currently on display at The Abbey Walk Gallery. Check it out if you live nearby for a piece of art history! For more info check: HERE
