Weekend Features: “The Thing” by Tyler Stout

Posters From The Past

When it comes to movie poster artists nowadays, Tyler Stout is top tier. His extravagantly illustrated posters are so densely packed with key elements, scenes, and characters of the movie, that you almost feel that you are watching the entire movie just by looking at his posters. Stout’s style of photo-realistic meets comic-book action hero illustrations seems to bring the characters to life. I have never seen so much active motion going on in a still image of a Tyler Stout poster.

This poster first went on sale in April of 2008 on www.mondotees.com and then later on his own website. From what can recall, this poster was slow steady build to the “Holy Grail” heights that it is now. Getting the poster on drop day was pretty effortless, but as weeks and months passed, fans kept coming back to this print, new fans discovered this and the talent of this artist, and nowadays it is regarded as a classic Tyler Stout.

“The Thing” is a 24″ x 36″ 5-color screenprint with GID ink. Every character infected by The Thing has glow-in-the-dark eyes. Very cool! The regular edition had a run of 210, and variant Silver Edition of 65. Initial secondary market prices lingered around the $150-200 range, but with Stout’s popularity literally exploding, seeing secondary market sells in excess of $2000+ has been documented a number of times.

“Frankenstein” by Drew Struzan

Mondo had it’s “Mondo Mystery Movie” tonight at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles, CA. And with a milestone achievement, they hooked up with legendary poster artist Drew Struzan and released the much anticipated “Frankenstein” screenprint. This print is a 15″ x 36″ 21-color Screenprint, with an edition size of 325, signed and numbered, and cost $285. The detail of this print is impressive and the number of colors is staggering. Only around 75 prints were sold tonight, and the remaining prints will likely go online for sale at a later undisclosed time.

The interview with Struzan and Justin of Mondo was entertaining and insightful, with Struzan coming off as sagacious, satirical, and witty. Yet kind, humbled and appreciative at the same time. My favorite quote of the night came from an audience question that asked him what his favorite poster of his was. Of which he answered:

“That’s a very difficult question. I guess that’s because people must live off their favorites. As a creator, I can’t do that. If I had a favorite, then I’d become redundant because I’d keep trying to repeat what I’d like best. So I always think the best one and my favorite, will be the next one…until the next one, and that keeps me growing and moving forward..”- Drew Struzan

Another interesting tidbit of info during the interview came when Struzan spilled the beans that he may be doing other pieces with Mondo in the future. Wow!

As for the movie, Frankenstein (1931), it was fun to revisit this Hollywood classic after being seasoned these days with modern cinema and its CGI-overdose. This 1931 version of Frankenstein is iconic and will always be associated with Hollywood during its early heydays.

After the movie, Justin updated us on the MMM showing in October (7,8,9) at the New Beverly. Tickets are $75 per ticket/movie, with 2 movies shown per day at around 7:00pm & 9:00pm intervals. Tickets are planned to go on sale on Tuesday, September 13 around 12pm-3pm PST somewhere HERE. Keep a close keep on Justin’s Twitter for more updates.

And now for a close look at the “Frankenstein” print:

“Mondo Mystery Movies” at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles

As per the Mondo Blog, here’s the latest:

“We are very proud to announce that we will be teaming up with the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles to do posters for special events and screenings. We have been big fans of the theater for years and are thrilled to be working with them on a regular basis. To celebrate this, we will be taking over the theater and programming a series of MONDO MYSTERY MOVIES on October 7, 8, 9. There will be two shows each day (6 total) and like all MMM’s, there will be a poster for each that you can only get at the event. Tickets will be going on sale for these events on Tuesday, September 13th. I’ll let you know the details on those Tuesday morning.

“We are excited. These shows are going to be great and we look forward to meeting a lot of our LA fans the weekend of the 7th.”

-Justin

Could it really be? 6 DIFFERENT movies with 6 different posters in a span of 3 days? In LA? For me personally, this is a great thing because I happen to live in LA. 🙂 Pretty amazing thing that Mondo has going starting with their posters being archived in The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, to their upcoming collaboration with movie-poster master Drew Struzan, to their success at their first San Diego Comic Con, to a licensing acquisition with Pixar, MMM2, and now MMM3 in Los Angeles. 2011 is the summer of Mondo.

“Tomorrow is probably the strangest pairing of posters for a Mondo release yet. The Disney classic Dumbo by Tom Whalen, and the Larry Cohen classic It’s Alive by Jon Smith.”- Mondo

Well, the cat is finally out of the bag. The 411 on The Alamo Drafthouse and Mondo’s second Mystery Movie #2 is out. It is “Jurassic Park” done by Aaron Horkey. Those looking to score one will have to either have gotten a MM2 ticket (which sold out instantly) or get one on the secondhand market. Mondo added that Jurassic Park will also later be done by another yet-announced artist, and will be available for online sale timed to Universal’s release of the Jurassic Park trilogy on Blu-ray on October 25th. Excellent.
