“Mondo Mystery Movie 5 & 6” at New Beverly Cinema 10-8-2011

Mondo had its “Mondo Mystery Movie 5 & 6” tonight, October 8, 2011 at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles, CA. Spirits and anticipation for the nights movies were high and the first thing Justin spoke about was quelling any concerns for any horror movies for tonight. In fact the first movie showing of the night was at the opposite spectrum of a horror movie.

The first movie of the night was Iron Giant (1999), directed by Brad Bird. It is the story of a young boy and his encounter with a innocent giant alien robot. A charming relationship between the two is struck and the challenges and moral lessons they go through together are pure human elements. Something that we discover in the robot as the movie progresses. Bittersweet animation classic. Presenting the movie was animated film-critic and historian, Leonard Maltin, and the poster was done by Kevin Tong.

The second movie of the night was Assault on Precinct 13 (1976), directed by John Carpenter. An action-suspense thriller about a police officer and an epic showdown with a local gang. A cult classic with a 70s flair and a strangely infectious soundtrack. Presenting this movie along with Justin, were special guests Austin Stoker (play Lt. Ethan Bishop) and Joseph Kaufman (the executive producer). Poster was done by none other than Tyler Stout. Interesting to note that the edition released at this MMM was the variant version. The regular version will be released at a later date. Also the art Stout did will be used for an upcoming Blu-Ray release of this movie.

Kevin Tong’s new art print series ‘Unfamiliar Objects’ is now available for pre-order! The ‘Unfamiliar Objects’ series is about creating visual metaphors for aspects of the world at large through modest objects that are old and largely out of use. There are six prints in this series, are all 4-colour screenprint on 18″ x 24″ Off White Cover Paper. Editions of 200. Cost £35 ($55US). Or you can get the whole 6-print set for £190 ($296US). Alot of new updates from artist Kevin Tong. First he updated his website. You can check it out at http://tragicsunshine.com/. Second he is set to release a couple new prints this week based on classic novels “Anthem” by Ayn Rand, and “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley. Both prints will be 18″ x 24″ Screenprints, with edition sizes of 150 each, and cost $30 each. They go on sale Wednesday September 21 at a random time HERE.

Kevin Tong is also releasing a batch of his Artist Proofs from previous Mondo releases. There will be two versions. A regular (silver version) and a San Diego ComicCon exclusive (gold version). I’ve seen both in person and the metallic paints in both are understated and tasteful. Classy. Both prints are 24″ X 36″ and will cost $80 and $100 respectively. They go on sale today Tuesday August 23rd at a random time HERE
