“Well we have reached the end of the series and what better way to do so by representing the true gateway drug, Alcohol and it’s propaganda film “The Road to Ruin”. Released in 1934, the film tells a tale of a young woman who gets in with the wrong crowd, and begins the journey down the spiral of booze, drugs and sex and ends up an alcoholic, pregnant, and is forced to get an abortion.

Taboos abound, the film of course was boycotted by the catholic church which forced massive edits. For the time, it was quite salacious but of course, overly dramatic and too campy to be taken seriously. Worse than a after school special. But it has it’s points.

With this poster I wanted to finish up the whole “See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil” undertone I began with both Reefer Madness and Cocaine fiends. Here, we have the demon emerging from her glass of devil’s brew, throwing red rose petals into the poor girl’s face. The action is aggressive, contrasting the lighter giving of the single flower on Reefer Madness. A nice representation of the effect Alcohol plays on us. It lures us in under false comfort, pretending it loves us ( red roses), comforts us in times of peril and weakness. While some become happy, some become violent, and some become completely different people, almost possessed. It leaves us miserable, in pain and sick. Yet we go right back to it. Until a different rose is offered. But the same demon remains.

Grey Matter Art is proud to announce a new exclusive poster release for the propaganda film “Cocaine Fiends” by Timothy Pittides. This is part of “VICES”; a three poster series based on the propaganda films from the 1930’s and 1940’s. The first poster in the series,”Reefer Madness” was released on August 1st and this stunning first entry that begins the journey into our society’s need to control and be controlled.

They will release this as exclusive poster at New York Comic Con at their booth #2366, running from October 8th-11th. Any remaining copies will go on sale Monday, October 12th at 1pm Eastern (10am PDT) HERE.

“With the second poster in the VICES series, I wanted a central piece to fit in between Reefer Madness and the third and final poster and Cocaine Fiends seemed like a obvious choice. The film, while a bit more truthful in it’s portrayal of the drug, is still over the top and comical. It tried to capitalize on paranoia that Reefer Madness created in the public but never reached the level it’s predecessor reached. With the poster I wanted to use the women’s eyes as a drawing in point, big and wide while still maintaining her beauty and innocence ( using the white rose).

The Dope Demon (That’s what I am calling him now) emerging from the vial, engulfing her, keeping her both comfortable while at the same time controlling her. He leaves a trail of orange roses which symbolize energy and passion, something this vice surely invokes. I also wanted a synergy to the series and while in Reefer Madness, the demon is offering her a rose which is she is staring at (Seeing Evil), Cocaine Fiends offers the Demon whispering to her, tempting her (Hearing Evil). This series has been a blast to do and wanna thank Grey Matter for the support and get ready for the third and final poster coming in November!” – Timothy Pittides

“When I decided to tackle Nosferatu, I wanted to make sure that it was something different. There is so many great prints and posters done for the film that hit their mark. From Ken Taylor’s beautiful art deco styled collage, Brandon Schaefer’s artistically crafted creepiness to Christopher Cox’s likeness driven design, artists have been paying a great tribute to arguably the greatest horror film ever made.

I first started with making the vampire was represented, not just in likeness but in tone, taking the design on cover of the vampire book Hutter finds in his room at the inn. The animals surrounding the eye were incorporated in the same order surrounding Orlock. I also wanted add the main element that would be familiar to most, choosing the wood carved cuckoo clock concept of both the period, and the country of origin of the film.

The choice of paper was extremely important to both the design and feel of the print. After going back and forth with my paper samples, I decided the film could be represented two different ways, the speckletone kraft being used for it’s antique look as well as the look of day scenes in the colorized version of the film and the carbon copy paper for it’s specks of browns and reds and of course representing the black and white of the original film. This two choices give people the choice on how they feel personally to the film.” – Timothy Pittides
