“A Band Called Death” by Jay Shaw (Mondo release)

Direct from Mondo:

Tomorrow we will be releasing our poster for Drafthouse Films’ recent acquisition, a documentary called A BAND CALLED DEATH. For our fans who have never heard of punk trio DEATH, I highly encourage watching the trailer for the film HERE. Their story is fascinating.

In short, they were a band who’s sound, some say, pre-dates The Ramones and Sex Pistols in originating Punk Rock as we know it. Trouble is, they were an all-black band with a controversial name that made record labels weary of their marketability, and so their album never got released. Unbeknownst to them, their only release, a 7″ single, became a secret success in the underground vinyl collectors market. It ultimately drove the band to reunite and find unexpected success 35 years after the recording of the material.

A BAND CALLED DEATH captures the fall and unexpected rise of a band who’s singular vision paid off in unexpected ways. We are super excited to release our new poster by Jay Shaw. Be sure to check out the film, now on VOD, when it comes out in select theaters courtesy of Drafthouse Films. On sale Thursday, June 27th at a random time HERE.
