“Pacific Rim” by Todd Slater

Direct from Odd City Entertainment:

Just as Odd City Entertainment began their licensed limited edition print series for Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures Pacific Rim with an epic Jaeger print, they close it with a symbolic hand numbered and signed Gipsy Danger print from world renowed artist, Todd Slater. Each work of art took inspiration from various aspects of Oscar® nominated director Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim to retell the story in screen printed glory.

Roman Morales, Odd City CEO, summed up this series of art, “When we picked up the license for Pacific Rim, we were so excited to be working with Guillermo del Toro and his team. We knew that we had to deliver something very special. The decision was made very early that we would do a series of prints but, we didn’t want them all to be the same. So, we set out to curate a series of different styles, themes and artists to show the complex nature this film embodies. Gabz brilliantly evoked WW-II style propoganda posters with his print, James Fosdike’s art tapped into the emotion and awe of the film, N.E. explored the concept of mind-melding in detailed metallic ink, Graham Erwin appealed to our own childhood fascination through his illustrations of monsters and machines and, with a beautiful foil variant, Todd Slater emphasized the enormity of the Kaiju threat and the Jaegers built to defend the human race.”

Todd Slater’s limited edition Pacific Rim prints will go on sale on Tuesday, July 16th at a random time HERE.

Todd Slater - Variant (Foil)

“Pacific Rim” by Todd Slater. 24″ x 36″ Screenprint. Ed of 75 S/N. $85 (Rainbow Foil Variant)

“When I first began seeing the early images for Pacific Rim, I was immediately struck by the scale of the Jaegers versus the humans. These pictures served as a reminder of how fragile human life is and I decided to create my image around this thought. I wanted to depict these giant machines as the protectors of humanity from the mysterious beasts that have emerged from a portal beneath the ocean.” -Todd Slater

“Put a giant monster in a film and I’m there. Put a giant robot in a film and I’m there. Put them together and you’ve made me a child again. I’m so excited about this film and I am absolutely thrilled to have had the opportunity to draw a poster for it. When I saw the trailer, the image of the young girl on a deserted street watching the jets fly over really struck a chord in me. I was reminded of the films, cartoons and comics that I read and loved as a child. I wanted to know what caused that street to be deserted, what the girl was in awe of, and where the jets were going. Lucky for me I was able to find out, and to create my impression of what was in store!” -James Fosdike

San Diego Comic Con posters from Mondo

Today, Mondo unveiled some of their posters that will be featured at the upcoming SDCC. The biggest change this time around is that some of their posters will be pre-sold online before the convention. This is to cut down heavy traffic and overall craziness that accompanied the Mondo booth last year. For the other dozen or so Mondo releases, instead of randomly tweeting the sale when it comes available and causing a mad stampede, they will have a daily schedule for you guys to check out showing the times of releases. I commend Mondo for the steps they have taken this year and really look forward to another great year at SDCC. Who’s going? 🙂

“Pacific Rim” by Graham Erwin. 12″ x 36″ Screenprint. Ed of 175 N. $50

“When first approached by Odd City to work on a poster for Pacific Rim, I immediately dove into watching all the trailers available to get a sense of what I found personally exciting about the film. The thing that struck me was how the Jaegers seemed truly massive, towering, and powerful. Each robot was designed with very strong silhouettes and such high levels of detail that I knew they would work well as a focal point with my illustration style. After some talk with Odd City’s CEO, Roman, we decided to go with the 12″ x 36″ format and custom lettering to hopefully put a unique spin on what is already a great property.” -Graham Erwin

“It is daunting to work on a project with so much scope and potential like Pacific Rim, not having seen the movie. While pouring over the various references that were available, the notion of two people having their minds synchronized to control a giant robot really caught my imagination. The concept of people entering each other’s minds in such a complete way is haunting to me. It’s a really intimate and abstract idea for such a large movie. That being said, I decided to make the poster more about the human characters than the monsters. I wanted to show the characters in a heroic, almost patriotic way, while also visualizing this pilot to pilot connection.” -N.E.
