Thinkspace Gallery presents: Meggs ‘Heavenly Creatures’ & Handiedan ‘Elegant Universe’

Gallery Openings/Exhibitions

thinkspace meggs handiedan

Thinkspace Gallery is pleased to present Heavenly Creatures, featuring new work by acclaimed Australian artist David ‘Meggs’ Hooke. Renowned for his founding work and involvement with the Everfresh Studio collective – established in Melbourne in 2004 – Meggs has been a prolific street artist and exhibitor for over a decade. Distilling his inspiration from an amalgam of pop cultural references, ancient mythology, classical imagery, and street art, Meggs’ recombines familiar imagery to explore and reinvent the archetype.

Concurrently on view in the Thinkspace project room is Elegant Universe, featuring new work by Dutch artist Handiedan. Handiedan creates elaborate three-dimensional collage pieces from a cut and paste method of re-assemblage. Starting with the iconic imagery of the vintage pin-up girl, popularized in the 30’s, the artist creates complex images from a combination of pattern, figurative imagery, and symbol. Her materials are culled from a vast array of printed cultural currency. Appropriating everything from postage stamps, and legal tender, to origami paper patterns, and historical sheet music motifs, the artist’s work is a combination of re-design and aggregation. Her multi-layered compositions transform found two dimensional imagery, literally re-imagining it in relief.

Opening Reception: Saturday, April 6th 6-9PM
-Both artists will be in attendance. Both exhibits run April 6th through April 27th

Remaining prints will be available in person at the show, and then online on Monday, April 8th in the afternoon HERE.

Charming Baker: ‘Lie Down I Think I Love You’ @ Milk Studios

Gallery Openings/Exhibitions

baker LIE DOWN I THINK I LOVE YOU

British artist Charming Baker is to stage his largest ever solo exhibition at Milk Studios, Los Angeles from March 21 – 24, 2013. Entitled Lie Down I Think I Love You, it will showcase new work exploring the unpredictable nature of love. It will comprise of 20 paintings as well as prints and sculptures. Baker will also unveil a sculptural installation depicting an oversized plastic toy passenger plane. Never having produced a work on such a scale before, this will mark a new phase in the artist’s oeuvre.

The Daily Telegraph recently proclaimed that ‘Baker has enjoyed one of the swiftest rises the art market has seen in recent years.’ His work commands the attention of some of the world’s most significant art collectors including Damien Hirst, Alberto Mugrabi, Frank Cohen and Harry Blain. Baker has achieved this without gallery representation instead taking a less conventional approach. In 2008 his work was spotted by Pat Magnarella and Roger Klein of PMMLA, the illustrious music management company behind Green Day and the Goo Goo Dolls. Recognising the parallels that there can be between rock band and fine art promotion, Magnarella flew to London to offer the artist a management deal.

It is remarkable that after only seven years of exhibiting his work to the public, Baker has achieved worldwide recognition. In 2010 with the backing of Magnarella he had a sell-out show in New York and received a similarly avid reception in London the following year. In 2012 he was chosen to participate in the V&A exhibition Britain Creates 2012: Fashion + Art Collusion in collaboration with acclaimed British designer Sir Paul Smith. His forthcoming and much-anticipated exhibition in Los Angeles will cement Baker’s growing reputation as one of the most dynamic British artists of his generation.

Milk Studios stands at the crossroads of the fashion, music, photography, and film worlds. A media company based out of New York and Los Angeles – Milk spans contemporary culture and is a hub for nurturing creativity and supporting partnerships with some of the industry’s most visionary talent and innovative brands.
Jealous Print Studio has collaborated with Baker to create and publish his print editions since 2008. To coincide with ‘Lie Down I Think I Love You’ Jealous will be curating an accompanying print room at the venue, featuring 5 brand new print releases and a pop-up studio space, printing exclusive small releases each day throughout the exhibition.

Raid71: ‘The Popular Face of New York’ @ Bottleneck Gallery

Gallery Openings/Exhibitions

raid71 The Popular Face of New York

“Pop culture profoundly influences the identities of not only its consumers,
but also its real world referents.

The curate’s egg that is globalisation has scattered a billion Brooklyns,
Bronxes and Manhattans around the world. Each one is selectively shot, sung
or drawn with an agenda. When the world sees Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks finally
meet at the top of the Empire State Building with Manhattan spread out
before them like a celestial banquet, the city becomes as synonymous with
romance as Belle Époque Paris; when Kong climbs the same building to meet
his tragic fate, the city becomes a jungle in which the astounding and the
unique are forever doomed to be reduced to bloody spectacle; when Patrick
Bateman wends his sanguinary way through the antiseptic warrens of Wall
Street, the city becomes an icy skullscape where weakness is punishable by
death.

With the exhibition ‘The Popular Face of New York’, I present an outsider’s
perspective on a city. For me, this is Scorsese’s city
– an abyss of vice, drugs and crime which echoes with the sound of
ricocheting bullets; it is Woody Allen’s city of introspection, ennui and
sexual paranoia; it is the only city in the world strong enough to survive a
million celluloid obliterations; it is a postmodern diorama in which Top Cat
and Vito Corleone can coexist on the same block.” -Raid71

Oh yeah, and four — the artwork must kick ass, of course.
