“The Permanent Mark” by Collins

Okay, this is for a good cause. Yep 9/11 10th year is tomorrow. To commemorate this day, a print was designed in honor of the WTC and all proceeds will go to the Fire Fighter Cancer Foundation.

“It’s an emblem of two interlocked squares derived from the foundations of the towers. Our intent is to offer a symbol abstract enough to hold anyone’s interpretation of that morning but suggestive enough to relate to the event.
For us‚ this mark conveys the challenging but eternal lesson of that morning: we are as one. Just as we fall together‚ we can only rise together. Living with such empathy for one another is a steep mountain to climb. But we believe it is both the path out of 9-11 and the path we must trudge throughout life. This lesson is the permanent mark that day has left on us one decade later.”-Collins

You can buy this either as a print (22″ x 30″ Screenprint, edition size of 100, $35) or as a banner (24″ x 36″ print on canvas, edition size of 100, $75). On sale now HERE.

Weekend Features: “Sink or Swim” a benefit for sharks

Art Galleries and Exhibitions

Pangeaseed, in collaboration with Spoke Art plans to hold an exhibition in support to raise awareness of the rapid and mass depletion of one of natures most incredible creatures, sharks. Featured will be original works from 30 internationally renowned artists such as Dave Kinsey, Josh Keyes, Dan May, Jim Phillips, Jeff Soto and many more. So much talent!

Each year, a staggering 80 million sharks are killed, most of them are killed only for their fins to satisfy an unsustainable appetite for shark fin soup. In the cruel practice known as “finning,” the shark is hooked and brought aboard the boat where its fins are then cut off and the still alive but limbless animal is tossed back into the sea. With no instruments to move, the helpless shark sinks to the ocean floor and eventually drowns. Sharks, being “apex predators”, play a vital role in keep the oceans fish population in balance. Without them, you would see an unnatural overpopulation of fish that would not be sustainable in the natural balance of the ecosystem.

PangeaSeed is a Tokyo-based grassroots organization dedicated to educating and raising international awareness on the plight of sharks. Through volunteer activism and various mediums including art, music, film, and photography, PangeaSeed aims to create an open dialog with the global community to develop an understanding of the need to preserve and protect sharks and their habitat.

Sink or Swim will run in San Francisco from 23 ~ 25 September 2011. In support of proposed bill (AB376) to ban shark fin in California State, Sink or Swim offers the community new perspectives on this widely misunderstood and demonized animal. Also, in addition to raising funds to keep sharks afloat both in Japan and around the world PangeaSeed will donate a percentage of the proceeds from Sink or Swim to organizations aiding animals affected by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

One notable print to be featured at this event is Josh Keyes Scorch I piece:

"Scorch I" by Josh Keyes

What Keyes is able to convey in this piece is a very powerful commentary tackling multi-issues at once. Issues such as man-made pollution, to its toils with oil dependencies, modern urbanization, and the plight of sharks. Powerful indeed and I will do whatever I can myself to get a print of this.

“Mondo Mystery Movies” at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles

As per the Mondo Blog, here’s the latest:

“We are very proud to announce that we will be teaming up with the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles to do posters for special events and screenings. We have been big fans of the theater for years and are thrilled to be working with them on a regular basis. To celebrate this, we will be taking over the theater and programming a series of MONDO MYSTERY MOVIES on October 7, 8, 9. There will be two shows each day (6 total) and like all MMM’s, there will be a poster for each that you can only get at the event. Tickets will be going on sale for these events on Tuesday, September 13th. I’ll let you know the details on those Tuesday morning.

“We are excited. These shows are going to be great and we look forward to meeting a lot of our LA fans the weekend of the 7th.”

-Justin

Could it really be? 6 DIFFERENT movies with 6 different posters in a span of 3 days? In LA? For me personally, this is a great thing because I happen to live in LA. 🙂 Pretty amazing thing that Mondo has going starting with their posters being archived in The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, to their upcoming collaboration with movie-poster master Drew Struzan, to their success at their first San Diego Comic Con, to a licensing acquisition with Pixar, MMM2, and now MMM3 in Los Angeles. 2011 is the summer of Mondo.
