“Humanity” by Chuck Sperry

In the ever approaching 10th year anniversary of 9/11, signs of peace, civility, and humanity should always reign over the brute terror that occurred on 9-11-2001. However no one should ever forget what happened…

This print goes on sale Friday September 9th @The Vortex. 2341 E. Olympic Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90021

"Humanity" by Chuck Sperry. 22" x 33" Screenprint. Ed of 50 S/N.

“My favorite revolutionary political posters are from the Cuban Golden Age of political graphics from the late 1960′s and early 1970′s. There is a colorful fusion of psychedelia and political message. I did this poster in the spirit of clear, bold, direct communication.

I wanted to communicate the “visible” world and the “hidden” world that everything in objective reality depends on. Like the world of “ideas” and the world of “objects.” Or the world of spirit and the world of life. The individual struggle and the human struggle.

It’s a sort of yin yang idea….

There’s this greater submerged “underground” reality – it is larger – breaks over the bounds of the poster. It could represent spirit or humanity. The above ground living flower is represented as transitory (it is losing petals in the wind) – but it’s roots go down from the heart to the heart of the submerged reality – where it is fed – and eternal.

The hard part was to show something this complicated in a simple and pleasing graphic.”- Chuck Sperry

2 prints by David Soukup

David Soukup is really taking stencil-art to the next level with his amazingly skilled and intricate stencil-work he is doing. Right now he is geared up for an exhibition opening at The Phone Booth Gallery taking place this September 17th. Featured are several new stencil pieces he has done. Most of his stencils are so intricate that he could only use them a few times before the stencils got clogged up.

From this show, he plans to release 2 screenprints of his stencil art. Both are 18″ x 24″ Screenprints, with an edition size of $45, or $80 as a set. If you are in the Long Beach, CA area, do try and make the opening. If not, you can hopefully grab some stuff the following day online. Keep posted!

“As we type this newsletter, American rock group The National is preparing for a two-night run at Philadelphia’s historic Academy of Music. Our own Mike Davis took on poster design duties, capturing both the history and majestic qualities of the Academy as well as the colorful fact that this is a rock concert! Two of them, at that! A highly detailed architectural rendering of the venue meets groovy patterns and ornate lettering. It’s all here!”

“The Avett Brothers 2011” by Scott Avett

“Limited edition hand-made linoleum block print created by Scott Avett to commemorate The Avett Brothers 2011 tour. These prints were created one at a time, by a tedious and time consuming process of hand-carving the image into linoleum in reverse, which was then inked and pressed onto heavy, high quality paper stock. Each is hand numbered and signed by Scott.” Approximate measurements are 31″ x 62.5″. Cost $500. The size varies from print to print because each sheet was hand-pulled. Below is a vid that shows the painstaking process of making this print. Amazing! On sale now HERE.
