"Gather Around" by Greg 'Craola' Simkins.

“This fine looking print was part of Simkins exhibition ‘Cloud Theory‘ that opened last week at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles, CA. Clean off-white mat and the flowing cut patterns of the frame go well with this instant classic Simkins piece.”

"Wrath of Khan" by Tyler Stout. Pic provided by Mark Z.

“I found a wood frame molding with “Enterprise red” on the inside track and it was simple from that point on. I didn’t want to distract too much from Tyler Stout’s really great poster, so I went with the main matting black along with a thin red mat to both separate the black mat from the black in the poster and to give the framing a bit more presence. As an aside, this poster has been a huge hit in my office. People have been coming by to check it out. Most of my office mates found the WOK movie the best in the series, and they all thought the artist [Stout] did a fantastic job. -Mark Z.”

I am glad for the opportunity to frame numerous art pieces by Tim Lee. Tim’s current subject matter usually encompasses a musical motif with a cast of creepy characters. I have framed 4 of the popular limited edition print; “Blue Night”. Each frame is different. -Jeff Magner

bertmer battle for the planet of the apes mark z

"Battle for the Planet of the Apes" by Florian Bertmer. Pic provided by Mark Z.

“Florian Bertmer based his poster on an old woodblock print of “Cain Slaying Able” by DĂŒrer.

durer cain slaying abel

“Interestingly, at least in my nerdish opinion, Kubrick used the same imagery in 2001 a Space Odyssey in the scene in which the “intelligent” weapon-wielding man-ape is beating his enemy ape with a jaw bone. All that aside, I went with the obvious and used a bamboo style frame and earth-tone mats to get a primitive, Planet of the Apes look to the print. I wanted also to avoid any bright colors in the matts or frame given Bertmer’s large, bright, almost luminescent red sky. For my tastes, I liked this poster the most out of the collection of Ape posters offered by Mondo.- Mark Z.”

stout captain america mark z re

"Captain America" by Tyler Stout. Pic provided by Mark Z.

“I went simple with a jet black wood frame, blue top mat and a thin red second mat to bring out the colors of the poster and to separate the larger blue from image. I think the red framed the image nicely and separated the blue banner at the top from the blue mat. This was a fantastic poster and framing it was pretty basic. The only trick was to keep it simple to avoid detracting from the image. I am a long time antique movie and magic poster collector, but this poster introduced me to a whole new aspect of poster art and collecting. Great way to start. Oh, and pardon the distortion caused by the wide angle lense. The frame and poster are actually straight. -Mark Z.”

Broadmore district 9 ray g

"District 9" by Greg Broadmore. Pic provided by Ray G.

“This is a limited print (of 150 total) of the concept art for the mother ship in the movie District 9 (2009).It was drawn by Greg Broadmore, artist for the production studio Weta. Also, it is signed by Peter Jackson, the executive producer of the film and director of films such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong and the upcoming Hobbit.

“The frame is brown with a golden metallic sheen that I feel gives the piece a mechanized, almost steampunk feel. I decided to go with a large matted border around the print to give the piece some larger scale as the mother ship of the aliens was supposed to give a very imposing feel looming over the city of Johannesburg.”

“I loved the movie, and I cant wait for D-10 (supposed to be in early production stages). Hope you guys like the print! -Ray G.”

“Nicole P. is the framing manager at Hobby Lobby in Florence, SC and these are some of her frame ups. I really like her interpretations of these posters. Regarding the Taylor poster: “This one is special to me because my boyfriend bought it for me before he tried to be my boyfriend….clever fellow 😉 A fancier frame than I would normally choose, but the print dictated the framing. I also wouldn’t normally consider using a brushed gold as the top mat but it went perfectly with the metallics in the print. -Nicole P.”

"Totoro" by Olly Moss. Pic provided by Karl S.

“This Moss frame up is absolute framing perfection. What else needs to be said? It’s PERFECT. Karl on this piece: It was a challenging piece to frame, with some colours that are difficult to complement and not clash all the way around. I went with “Raspberry Fizz” for the inner mat, which really brought the bottom type out and matched the range of pinks & purples. The larger purple outer mat has a subtle cloth texture. The frame itself is a concave matte brushed nickel with a slight yellow tone that works well with similar tones in the print. Overall it’s a pretty contemporary look and I can’t imagine any other options for this print. I’m in love! -Karl S.”

"Saying Goodbye" by Audrey Kawasaki. Pic provided by David G.

“By now you may have noticed that I repeat some of the same prints from past articles. However, this points out that each frame up of the same piece is intepreted different with equally great results. Proof that the final framing job does add to the art. Regarding this piece: The charcoal black/brown wood and the subtle orange-brown lining the edge matches the colors in the print very well. It’s simple enough not to overload the details but ornate enough to add some flavor to the piece. We tried different mat colors but kept going back to white. -David G.”
