“Mondo Mystery Movie 5 & 6” at New Beverly Cinema 10-8-2011

Mondo had its “Mondo Mystery Movie 5 & 6” tonight, October 8, 2011 at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles, CA. Spirits and anticipation for the nights movies were high and the first thing Justin spoke about was quelling any concerns for any horror movies for tonight. In fact the first movie showing of the night was at the opposite spectrum of a horror movie.

The first movie of the night was Iron Giant (1999), directed by Brad Bird. It is the story of a young boy and his encounter with a innocent giant alien robot. A charming relationship between the two is struck and the challenges and moral lessons they go through together are pure human elements. Something that we discover in the robot as the movie progresses. Bittersweet animation classic. Presenting the movie was animated film-critic and historian, Leonard Maltin, and the poster was done by Kevin Tong.

The second movie of the night was Assault on Precinct 13 (1976), directed by John Carpenter. An action-suspense thriller about a police officer and an epic showdown with a local gang. A cult classic with a 70s flair and a strangely infectious soundtrack. Presenting this movie along with Justin, were special guests Austin Stoker (play Lt. Ethan Bishop) and Joseph Kaufman (the executive producer). Poster was done by none other than Tyler Stout. Interesting to note that the edition released at this MMM was the variant version. The regular version will be released at a later date. Also the art Stout did will be used for an upcoming Blu-Ray release of this movie.

“Frankenstein” by Drew Struzan

Mondo had it’s “Mondo Mystery Movie” tonight at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles, CA. And with a milestone achievement, they hooked up with legendary poster artist Drew Struzan and released the much anticipated “Frankenstein” screenprint. This print is a 15″ x 36″ 21-color Screenprint, with an edition size of 325, signed and numbered, and cost $285. The detail of this print is impressive and the number of colors is staggering. Only around 75 prints were sold tonight, and the remaining prints will likely go online for sale at a later undisclosed time.

The interview with Struzan and Justin of Mondo was entertaining and insightful, with Struzan coming off as sagacious, satirical, and witty. Yet kind, humbled and appreciative at the same time. My favorite quote of the night came from an audience question that asked him what his favorite poster of his was. Of which he answered:

“That’s a very difficult question. I guess that’s because people must live off their favorites. As a creator, I can’t do that. If I had a favorite, then I’d become redundant because I’d keep trying to repeat what I’d like best. So I always think the best one and my favorite, will be the next one…until the next one, and that keeps me growing and moving forward..”- Drew Struzan

Another interesting tidbit of info during the interview came when Struzan spilled the beans that he may be doing other pieces with Mondo in the future. Wow!

As for the movie, Frankenstein (1931), it was fun to revisit this Hollywood classic after being seasoned these days with modern cinema and its CGI-overdose. This 1931 version of Frankenstein is iconic and will always be associated with Hollywood during its early heydays.

After the movie, Justin updated us on the MMM showing in October (7,8,9) at the New Beverly. Tickets are $75 per ticket/movie, with 2 movies shown per day at around 7:00pm & 9:00pm intervals. Tickets are planned to go on sale on Tuesday, September 13 around 12pm-3pm PST somewhere HERE. Keep a close keep on Justin’s Twitter for more updates.

And now for a close look at the “Frankenstein” print:

“Mondo Mystery Movies” at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles

As per the Mondo Blog, here’s the latest:

“We are very proud to announce that we will be teaming up with the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles to do posters for special events and screenings. We have been big fans of the theater for years and are thrilled to be working with them on a regular basis. To celebrate this, we will be taking over the theater and programming a series of MONDO MYSTERY MOVIES on October 7, 8, 9. There will be two shows each day (6 total) and like all MMM’s, there will be a poster for each that you can only get at the event. Tickets will be going on sale for these events on Tuesday, September 13th. I’ll let you know the details on those Tuesday morning.

“We are excited. These shows are going to be great and we look forward to meeting a lot of our LA fans the weekend of the 7th.”

-Justin

Could it really be? 6 DIFFERENT movies with 6 different posters in a span of 3 days? In LA? For me personally, this is a great thing because I happen to live in LA. 🙂 Pretty amazing thing that Mondo has going starting with their posters being archived in The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, to their upcoming collaboration with movie-poster master Drew Struzan, to their success at their first San Diego Comic Con, to a licensing acquisition with Pixar, MMM2, and now MMM3 in Los Angeles. 2011 is the summer of Mondo.
